Worlds Oldest Married Couple

PHILADELPHIA - The latest edition of the Guinness Book of World Records lists Herbert Brown, 105 and his lovely wife Magda, 100 as the world’s oldest married couple. There total combined ages equal 205 years and 293 days, not a bad lifespan when you think of it!!!

 Other couples have been married longer, and some other individuals are older. In fact, on June 1, Guinness had named an English couple, Percy and Florence Arrowsmith, also 105 and 100 respectively, as the oldest.

The Browns proved they beat the Arrowsmiths by a just a few days, and then on June 13, poor old Percy Arrowsmith died. The Guinness Book of Records has now certified that Herb and Magda Brown now have claim to the title..

Herbert Brown and the former Magda Fritz married in their native Austria in 1930. Life became dangerous for them when the Nazis came to power in 1938. German soldiers would often raid their home. Herb Brown survived his time in a Nazi concentration camp, when he was rescued by neighbors who raised money for his release. he even was once  interrogated by the notorious Nazi butcher Adolf Eichmann.

The couple in fear for there lives, travelled to England, then in 1940 they moved to Philadelphia, where Magda gained work as a seamstress and Herb took on work at a nearby factory sewing shoulder seams onto tuxedos.

Their beautiful daughter, Trudie Solarz, documented their terrible experiences onto videotape for Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation.

They now spend there twilight years living at Harbor View apartments in Philadelphia, Magda is always up and dressed by 6:30 a.m., with lipstick and pearls, and Herbert, despite fading hearing, still enjoys the company of his loving wife.

"He doesn’t talk much," Solarz said. "But that’s nothing new. Mum never let him get a word in."

Betty Lowery, the assistant activity director at Harbor View, where the staff is planning a celebration, asked Magda her secret of longevity. "You have to be happy all the time," Magda says. "Think of life as you want it to be."
