Telstra Launches ICE Service

Mobile Phone Records… Incase Of Emergency!!!

A new emergency contact system using mobile telephone address books could be used to alert family and friends in the aftermath of a terrorist attack or big disaster.
The system, to be launched by Telstra this week and supported by the State Government, will encourage mobile telephone users to store contact details of a relative or friend in their handset under the acronym ICE — "in case of emergency".

Emergency services personnel would then be able to quickly contact relatives of victims.

Telstra will begin sending text messages to more than 7 million Australians tomorrow, encouraging them to store an ICE number in their mobile telephones.

The idea, which emerged from Britain, is aimed at assisting emergency service workers after a big incident, or even an accident, to establish fast contact with family.

The safety or identity of an individual could be confirmed or medical information obtained.

Victoria’s Police Minister, Tim Holding, has welcomed the idea. "Placing an ICE contact in your mobile could make it much easier for emergency service personnel to reach a family member or friend in an emergency," he said.

Telstra’s consumer and marketing group managing director, David Moffatt, said ICE was an easy step that people could take to receive help in times of need.

Those suggested as a contact include a family member, close friend or even a doctor. "Ideally your ICE contact should know your basic medical information, such as blood type and allergies, and be able to help emergency services make decisions if needed," Mr Moffatt said. "You could also store your blood type under your ICE entry."

For more than one contact name, ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc could be used.

Opposition police spokesman Kim Wells said the ICE system was a great idea that the Liberal Party strongly supported.

"The first thing parents fear when their children are overseas or in Australia and there is a disaster is that they are in harm." The ICE system would enable quick contact with a loved one, he said.

But the system is not without its problems.

In an emergency it could be difficult to determine the owner of a specific mobile phone and many people lock their phones with a PIN. Also, phones come in many different brands and varieties, and how to retrieve stored information may not be immediately apparent to someone trying to work with an unfamiliar type of phone.
