Living High On The Blog

When Melburnian Darren Rowse began his first experiment in blogging a little over two-and-a-half years ago, he was part of a group starting a new church and merely wanted to keep a record of what was being done.

Today, he earns a nice round figure from his many blogs, enough to make it a full-time occupation that’s catapulted him into the highest tax bracket.

He advises companies that want to explore how blogging can enhance their products or services, speaks about blogging whenever he can and is part of an emerging Melbourne business network designed to support and resource micro-businesses in the inner-northern suburbs.

Rowse started his first blog, the Living Room, in November 2002. "I quickly discovered nothing posted on the internet is private and that hundreds (and soon thousands) of people around the world were interested in what I was writing because they were thinking through similar issues," he said. "I discovered the power of blogging and quickly became addicted."

After a year, Rowse started a digital photography blog, his biggest with daily visitors numbering between 11,000 and 16,000.

"It really started as an accident - I wanted a place to post some pictures I’d taken on a trip. I also posted a mini-review of my digital camera and soon realised that no one was looking at my photos and everyone was reading the review," he says.

There is nothing of the nerd or the geek in Rowse. He says he knew little about computers or the internet and only had some training in marketing and in theology. He has mainly worked as a minister in churches over the years.

"I’ve taught myself a little HTML and design, but mainly get others to do this side of things for me," he says. "I’ve always been interested in writing and so naturally fit into the content creation side of things."

Despite having so many blogs and earning so much, he is relatively unknown, confessing he hadn’t done much to publicise his activities, because he had been concentrating on the content. And he had chosen to use top-level domains - such as .com and .net - and not Australian domains.

Also, he says, blogging is yet to gain the kind of profile in Australia that it enjoys in North America, and people still ask him to explain what a blog is.

He realised that blogging could put food (and much more) on the table about a year-and-a-half year ago. It began with Adsense word ads, with which he hoped to cover the costs of his blogging - ISP costs, hosting and design. But over the last year, it has grown progressively to give him a good income.

He collaborates with other bloggers to run event-driven blogs - on the Michael Jackson trial which he ran with a New Zealander, and the Athens Olympics, which got 2 million hits in a fortnight.

"I collaborate on many levels with other bloggers - from simply linking to their work and receiving their links - through to having them guest blog on my blogs when I go on holidays (I recently went away for a month and had 50 guest bloggers keep my blogs going) - through to actually partnering with others on blogs," Rowse says.

He also runs a blog about how people can make money through blogging - and, as a result, gets a lot of correspondence.

Rowse says his experience has shown him that people want to talk about the issues the world is facing. "They want and need spaces to interact with others with similar interests, passions, problems and ideas."
