First Arrests In London Train Bombing

Police made their first arrest on Tuesday in connection to last week’s London bombings, detaining one man in the north of England following a series of raids, a senior police officer said.

Police also uncovered some dangerous "material" when they carried out the search through several locations in West Yorkshire, deputy assistant commissioner Peter Clarke told a news conference in London.

"One man has been arrested in West Yorkshire and will be brought to London to be questioned," said Clarke, head of the Metropolitan Police anti-terrorist squad, who did not offer further details.

Referring to Tuesday’s raids, which centred on the city of Leeds, Clarke said: "Some material has been found which has caused the West Yorkshire police to take measures to ensure there is no risk to the public.

"The investigation of what has been found will be a detailed and lengthy exercise."

In addition, he said that police found a vehicle at the train station car park in Luton, northwest of London, thought to be linked to Thursday’s bombings which killed at least 52 people.

"Again, steps are being taken to ensure there is no risk to the public," Clarke said.

Three of the four top suspects in the terrorist attacks came from the West Yorkshire area, police said on Tuesday.

Six arrest warrants had been issued in the London bombings investigation, while evidence suggested one bomber died in the bus attack, but the coroner must confirm.

One suspect had been arrested in West Yorkshire and would be brought to London for questioning.

Police said no-one should doubt bombings were work of "extremists and criminals" and no ethnic communities should be blamed.
